It all started on a farm
Born in 1944 in Awendaw, South Carolina, James White established JWC in 1981. He was an avid farmer who understood that with a little modification, those farming skills could translate into the beginnings of a successful sitework business.
And so, JWC was started as a very modest operation with just a handful of employees and about as many pieces of heavy equipment.
In the early years of JWC, Mr. White's biggest challenge was building a reputation. He focused on gaining trust one customer and one job at the time. His perseverance paid off, because here we are 40+ years later.
In the Family
A 1996 graduate of the Citadel, Mr. White's son, Dan, felt the allure of the dirt world, too. He once said "the things I like most about the construction industry are the smell of dirt and asphalt, and watching the process from wooded beginning to completed development".
In 2009, at the age of 35, Dan Hankins started his career in sitework by joining JWC out in the field as a laborer. Before that, Dan was managing DH Hankins Trucking Co., a hauler / supplier of aggregate and dirt material.
Since then, the company has grown year over year. In 2014, Dan was made partner and in 2021, Dan took ownership of JWC. As of 2024, our fleet of equipment has grown to more than 40 pieces, 10 of which were purchased in the last three years. And, our employee base is more than 50 and still growing.

Day to Day
Now at the age of 80, Mr. White still makes regular appearances at the office and continues to generate revenue for JWC with several projects each year.
We're thrilled with how far we've come, and also hungry for a whole lot more while remaining committed to our core values. Our successes over the years are due in large part to those who've been with us from the beginning and those who have joined us along the way. Our people will always be our greatest asset.
